How to Make Books by Esther K. Smith

This book just came out this fall and is a must for any letterpress or book arts fan. Esther K. Smith of Purgatory Pie Press reveals her secrets to making handmade books. The photos by David Michael Zimmerman and the illustrations by Lindsay Stadig are a beautifully compliment Esther’s instructions and will really make you want to start a project!

Smith and Dikko Faust of Purgatory Pie Press at the Center For Book Arts Holiday Fair FRIDAY the 14th from 6-9 at the Preview Party ($10) or Saturday the 15th at the Holiday Fair from 11am-5pm. Expertly designed by Deb Wood at Princeton Architectural Press, this book introduces the reader to what guerilla art IS, how it is DONE, and and leads you through a bunch of fun exercises. The format suggests an official handbook with its cute ring binding and cardboard-looking cover with a silver spine that resembles the ultimate in DIY materials, our beloved DUCT TAPE. Its as if your cool friend handed over to you her book of secrets and opened the door to radical free fun.

Working on this book was the best project ever, because WFMU is the coolest radio station around these parts, and it’s Splendid Corp.’s dream to work on something that so lovingly celebrates a really vibrant time for music and art, a time that was well captured in the pages of LCD, the program guide of WFMU. Dave the Spazz combed through copies of the magazine for the best selections of underground comic art and music writing, and this book is so chock full of STUFF that it will take a while to consume it all. If you know any avid indie music fan who loves vinyl and oddities, this would be a very good gift.

I got mine at the Bust Holiday Craftacular last year and ordered one online once I was ready for a new wallet. I love it and I really recommend it for organization and the sheer joy of seeing so many colors when you go to get your money. The little sleeves are great for business cards and receipts too. Its nice to get a useful and cool gift handmade by real people.
